Thursday, july 16th
Well, we're finally here, in body if not completely in mind. We left home 7:30am Monday, the 13th, arrived in the capitol, Lome, 7pm Tuesday (2pm @ home), spent 2 hours in immigration and customs and went to a guest house for the night. There are no streetlights here and I had forgotten how dark the streets are at night. People stand in the dirt and sell things and I was sure that we would run someone over. We spent Wednesday morning at immigration applying for visas and it was a little disconcerting to leave our passports with their assurance that we'll get them in a week or so. Three bumpy hours later we arrived at the hospital. After supper, Salem was on call and operated most of the night on a child's leg that had been mangled in a motorcycle accident and then on a man with a bowel perforation from typhoid. This morning he did several hernias and has more surgery scheduled this afternoon. In other words, he's happy as a clam. I'm trying to get used to the time change. Last night I grabbed a tube from my overnight kit and started to brush my teeth with Neosporin. I''m awaiting my assignments. In the meantime, I think I'll go take a nap! Keep on praying.

I'm glad you are there now. I can't believe how long it took or how far you are from home. What do you get to do? Please get your sleep and be careful. Please keep us posted. It's great to hear about your mission.
ReplyDeleteGreat to know that you arrived safely. I can well imagine how happy Salem is back in the operating room. My prayer is that you, Diane, will be able to find something to do that is very meaningful and purposeful for you. You both remain in my and our prayers. Do enjoy your blogs.
ReplyDeletePlease say "hi" to the monkey for me.
Faithfully,
Gary+
Yeah! We're connected. Salem sure got busy fast. I will definately keep you in my prayers. I'm off to Visitation Monastery this weekend. Keep safe and hope you get those passports back real soon!!!!! Did you forget that big ball of string to attach to them? ... just a little humor! love ya, Judy
ReplyDeleteHowdy from the Gulf Coast. Just wanted you to know that we had a great rain last evening and on into the night in the neighborhood. When I left to go to the Y this morning I had to delay my departure several minutes as I cleaned up all the branches that came down into the front yard. How much of it got to farm is another question.
ReplyDeleteI see Patrick's car in the driveway this morning, so he apparently is here for awhile.
You are still in our prayers.

Hi, Dianne & Salem! Salem your shirt is as good as new although it probably won't last quite as long as a new one would.
ReplyDeleteGood to know you arrived safely & do hope the lack of string on those passports won't matter!
We have had rain & more expected today although it's rumbbled enough to get me in the house only to fizzle out.
Much Love, Lindsey
Wow! What a trip! Glad we're with you in prayer. Especially praying for those Passports! Be safe. Blessings and love,
